Committee Listing

Committees have been established to address specific issues associated with nuclear medicine, scientific research, and the practice of nuclear medicine. 

The incoming President appoints all committee chairs and members, and all serve for specified periods of time. Listed below are the committees that volunteers are being considered for during the 2024-2025 appointment process.

Committee on Awards 
The Committee on Awards evaluates competitive applications and select recipients of ERF-funded grants and awards for physicians, scientists, and students. In addition, the committee develops criteria, award processes and related materials for new SNMMI grants and awards; and conducts an annual review of current ERF funded grants and awards that are non-donor designated to determine their usefulness in meeting needs of the nuclear medicine and molecular imaging community and in advancing the Society’s strategic goals and value initiatives.

Committee on Bylaws
The Committee on Bylaws is charged with maintaining the Bylaws and Procedures of the Society.

Committee on Coding and Reimbursement
The Coding and Reimbursement Committee monitors, analyzes, influences and disseminates information about coding and reimbursement policies and procedures that affect nuclear medicine; to actively participate in the development of coding and the use of coding that supports the utilization of nuclear medicine procedures in medical practice, such as CPT, ICD‐10, HCPCS codes and APCs; to establish a working dialogue with regulators, particularly CMS, and payers to effect change.

Committee on Community Based Nuclear Medicine
The Committee on Community Based Nuclear Medicine goals are the following: 1) to increase awareness about and access to new nuclear medicine technologies by non-academic nuclear medicine physicians; 2) to adapt and transition nuclear medicine technologies, standards and guidelines from the academic setting to non-academic practices; 3) to increase awareness about alternative business models for the delivery of nuclear medicine services, including increased access to radiochemistry and radiophysics expertise; 4) to analyze the impact of the regulatory environment on the non-academic practice of nuclear medicine and 5) to optimize the transition of nuclear medicine practice from volume to value in the non-academic setting, with a focus on quality, efficiency and patient satisfaction 

Committee on Continuing Education
The CE Committee reviews CE for upcoming live SNMMI sponsored and joint provider sponsored meetings are underway. In addition, CE Committee members review accreditation reports to determine if educational needs of target audience are being met and members review post-program outcome assessments to determine if educational programming meet the stated goals of the activities.

Committee on Ethics
The Committee on Ethics is a standing committee and its scope focuses on ensuring SNMMI activities are held to high ethical standards as well as the to develop and maintain a professional code of ethics for nuclear medicine professionals.

Committee on Fellows
The Committee on Fellows Committee is charged with evaluate competitive applications and select recipients of the Fellows Award. In addition, the committee reviews and updates criteria and application process for the Fellows Award.

Committee on Finance
The Committee on Finance does the following: 1)Oversees the operations of and provide guidance to the two subcommittees reporting directly to the committee - Subcommittee on Investments and Subcommittee on Audit; 2) Oversees financial affairs, assets, liabilities, revenues, expenses and budgets of the SNMMI and make recommendations regarding financial policy and strategy to the Board of Directors (Board); 3) Work with the Board to review current programs and establish appropriate prioritization; and 4)make recommendations to the Board regarding policies or practices needed to comply with regulatory changes.

Subcommittee on Investments
The Subcommittee on Investments does the following: 1)review the quarterly investment reports, monitor investment performance against stated benchmarks and report to the SNMMI Committee on Finance and Board of Directors, 2)meet with the administrators of SNMMI's investments to ensure the investment portfolio conforms to the investment policy statement, 3)review the investment policy statement with the administrators to determine if any changes are needed and 4) make recommendations to the Committee on Finance regarding any changes in the investment policy statement prior to making the recommendations to the Board of Directors.

Committee on Government Relations
The Committee on Government Relations is charged with reviewing federal regulations and congressional legislation that could possibly affect the nuclear medicine community as such policy issues arise.

Committee on Guidance Document Oversight
The Committee on Guidance Document Oversight does the follow:  1) recommend topics for new guidelines and determine schedule of periodic review and revision of existing guidelines, 2) develop and implement a process to maintain and update the guidelines, 3) determine if developing joint guidelines with other societies are appropriate and facilitate and manage opportunities to collaborate with other organizations and 4) develop ways to disseminate the guidelines to the members of the society and other stakeholders.

Committee on History
The Committee on History is charged with preserving and reviewing historical information within the field. 

Committee on In-Training & Early Career Professionals

The purpose of the SNMMI In-Training and Early Career Professionals Committee is to support and enhance the career of in-training and early career members. This is achieved through efforts to identify and establish successful career trajectories, offering tools and opportunities for engagement and growth, and serves as a valuable resource for professional development, networking, research, and progression.

Committee on Medical Internal Radiation Dose (MIRD)
The MIRD Committee advances nuclear medicine and radionuclide therapy by developing standard methods, models, assumptions, and mathematical schema for assessing internal radiation doses from administered radiopharmaceuticals.

Committee on Membership
The Committee on Membership is charged with assisting staff with the recruitment and retention policy within SNMMI. 

Committee on Outreach - Brain Imaging Working Group
The Brain Imaging Outreach Working Group focuses on increasing awareness among neurologists and other referring physicians about FDG, SPECT, dopamine transporter imaging, and amyloid imaging and their appropriate uses; providing updated patient materials for the website and all patient education events; and educating legislators, regulatory officials, and funding bodies.

Committee on Outreach - Breast Cancer Imaging Outreach Working Group
The Breast Cancer Imaging Outreach Working Group focuses on increasing awareness among patients and referring clinicians about imaging procedures for breast cancer such as FDG PET, estrogen receptor imaging (FES PET), molecular breast imaging (MBI), and sentinel lymph node mapping, and their appropriate uses; providing updated patient materials for the website and patient education events; and educating legislators, regulatory officials, and funding bodies.

Committee on Outreach - NET Working Group
The NET working group focuses on promoting molecular imaging and radiopharmaceutical therapies in this field, providing updated patient materials for the website and all patient education events, and educating legislators, regulatory officials, and funding bodies about the value of nuclear medicine in this disease category.

Committee on Outreach - Pediatric Working Group

The SNMMI Pediatric Outreach Working Group will focus on increasing awareness among patients, caregivers, and referring clinicians, as well as legislators, regulatory officials, and funding bodies, about the role of nuclear medicine imaging and therapy in diagnosing and managing disease for pediatric patients.

Committee on Outreach - Prostate Cancer Working Group
The Prostate Cancer Outreach Working Group focuses on increasing awareness among oncologists, urologists, and family practitioners about imaging and therapy technologies such as PSMA, FACBC, bone scintigraphy, and Radium 223, providing updated patient materials for the website and all patient education events, and educating legislators, regulatory officials, and funding bodies.

Committee on Outreach – Healthcare Administration Work Group

The SNMMI Healthcare Administrators Outreach Working Group will focus on increasing awareness among healthcare administrators and executives about the value nuclear medicine imaging and therapy brings to their institutions and the patients they serve. It will provide education and collateral resources to demonstrate the projected increase in the use of these procedures and the need to adequately support their nuclear medicine departments’ requirements for staffing, equipment, facilities, and training.

Committee on Procedure Standards
The purpose of the Committee on Procedure Standards is to establish and publish procedure standards for nuclear medicine. Review and revise existing standards as necessary for updating online SNMMI Procedure Standard Manual and to develop new standards as the need arises.

Committee on Publications
The Committee on Publications coordinates SNMMI publishing activities; to monitor the needs of the field and suggest new publications; to oversee publication of SNMMI journals. Evaluates the desirability of publishing projects presented to the society and researches and responds to publishing trends in the field of nuclear medicine and the publishing industry, for example, journal and book publishing, new medical journals, medical journal practices and article topics, journal peer-review practices and technologies.

Committee on Radiopharmaceuticals
The Committee on Radiopharmaceuticals will serve the SNMMI Board of Directors as the primary source for timely advice and information necessary to work with appropriate agencies to ensure the availability and appropriate use of radionuclides and radiopharmaceuticals that are necessary for clinical practice and research.

Committee on Women in Nuclear Medicine
The Women in Nuclear Medicine Committee encourages women physicians, pharmacists, physicists and scientists and technologists to become leaders and decision makers in our field.  The Committee also seeks to foster the development of professional interests and provide women with flexibility they need to balance family life with and career development as well as develop on-going opportunities for mentoring, networking and leadership training.

Artificial Intelligence Task Force
The AI Task Force identifies opportunities for the use of Artificial Intelligence in nuclear medicine and molecular imaging and identifies key gaps in resources needed (physical, computational, educational) for Artificial Intelligence development and deployment throughout nuclear medicine and molecular imaging. In addition, the Task Force will produce a “white paper” on Artificial Intelligence in nuclear medicine and molecular imaging for possible inclusion in the JNM Work, as appropriate, to assess Artificial Intelligence in select use cases, including sponsorship of data challenges. 

Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force
Understanding diversity, equity and inclusion issues and challenges within the nuclear medicine and molecular imaging community will require an understanding of the root causes for such disparities within the field. While SNMMI has always strived to be an inclusive and diverse organization, medicine, in general is not. By way of this new task force, SNMMI will work to more intentionally embrace diversity, equity into its organizational values as a way to intentionally enact change.

DOE Task Force
The SNMMI Department of Energy (DOE) Grant Task Force will apply for and, if awarded, fulfill a Department of Energy grant to institute programs that further the development and availability of nuclear medicine facilities in sub-Saharan Africa’s least developed countries. Through the grant, the Task Force will provide opportunities for SNMMI members to engage with ministries, institutions, and local health professionals in these countries to provide education and build foundations for sustainable capabilities for the utilization of nuclear medicine.

Dosimetry Task Force
Advancing molecularly targeted radionuclide therapy (MTRT) has been identified as one of the top goals of SNMMI.  A key component of treating patients with MTRT is dosimetry, however the tools and expertise are lacking.  Under the Therapy Center of Excellence, this Task Force - comprised of scientists and physicians with experience in molecularly targeted radionuclide therapy and dosimetry- will work to standardize how and when dosimetry should be implemented.

PET/MR Pediatric Task Force 
The PET/MR Pediatric Task Force will define the market including a survey sent to membership to determine actual clinical utilization on a global basis. In addition, the Task Force will create uniform technical standards, seek collaboration from industry for pediatric hardware and software development could improve utilization and identify potential weaknesses, including length of exam and increased need for anesthesia could be discussed. 

Clinical Trials Network (CTN) - Education Committee

This committee develops enduring and live educational content related to imaging and therapy in clinical trials, including the bi-annual Pathways newsletter.  Members are technologists, physicians, and scientists with experience in clinical trials. 

Clinical Trials Network (CTN) - Radiopharmaceutical Manufacturers Committee
The Radiopharmaceutical Manufacturers Committee addresses radiopharmaceutical manufacturing issues for clinical trials. Members are radiochemists and radiopharmacists.

Clinical Trials Network (CTN) - Research Committee
The Research Committee is a diverse group of researchers – physicians, chemists, and physicists – each with special capability or experience, to assist in the work of CTN and on clinical trials.

Clinical Trials Network (CTN) -  Scanner Validation and Qualification Committee
This Scanner Validation and Qualification Committee oversees the CTN’s phantom programs used in the validation of PET/CT and SPECT/CT cameras in clinical trials. Members are physicists.

Clinical Trials Network (CTN) -  Site Education Committee
The Site Education Committee develops enduring and live educational content related to imaging and therapy in clinical trials, including the bi-annual Pathways newsletter. Members are technologists, physicians, and scientists with experience in clinical trials.

Therapy Clinical Trials Network (TCTN)

The goal of the TCTN is to organize a network of highly qualified nuclear medicine clinical trial sites with substantial radiopharmaceutical therapy (RPT) and imaging expertise and infrastructure to operate under a set of standardized operating procedures to support the growing number of early and late phase RPT clinical trials. The committee meets regularly to develop standard operating procedures and other RPT trial-related materials.

Quality Measures Development Task force

The SNMMI created the Quality Measures Development Task force to support the Quality and Practice domain using empirical evidence and prioritizing patient quality and safety through quality measures.  Quality measures are a key tool to support quality improvement initiatives, meet regulatory requirements, and reimbursement. The task force includes expert members from a variety of backgrounds and expertise. 

Radiopharmaceutical Therapy Centers of Excellence (RPTCOE)

The SNMMI designated Centers of Excellence in Radiopharmaceutical Therapy meet strict regulatory, training, qualification, experience and performance criteria to help assure patients, their families, referring physicians and payors that rigorous procedures are in place and followed, leading to appropriate patient selection and outcome from radiopharmaceutical therapy. 

Radiopharmaceutical Therapy Registry (RaPTR)

To oversee the development of SNMMI Radiopharmaceutical Therapy Registry (RaPTR), that will provide the operational framework to support a community of practices committed to continuous patient centered imaging and therapy, practice transformation and innovation through ongoing data collection and quality improvement by developing best practices.

Committee on Quality, Evidence, and Patient Safety

Provide oversight of the society’s efforts in quality improvement and patient safety with the goal of establishing best practices for nuclear medicine. Develop educational sessions - including live image interpretation sessions – focused on improving quality and patient safety for MWM and AM. Provide recommendations to the SNMMI Board on issues related to clinical outcomes, quality improvement, and patient safety. Utilize data from RaPTR and RaPTR+PLUS to improve quality in radiopharmaceutical therapy.

Quality and Regulatory Compliance Task Force

The Quality and Regulatory Compliance Task Force is a group organized within the SNMMI serving as a resource for development and implementation of SNMMI policy to ensure patient and radiopharmaceutical quality. It is critical that as the SNMMI expands into therapy and theranostics it establishes a group that can develop SNMMI policy and communicate and facilitate engagement with relevant federal agencies to ensure patients have access to radiopharmaceuticals, and that radiopharmaceuticals are produced in a safe manner and delivered by trained professionals.
