The use of marijuana and new weight loss pharmaceuticals can impact gastric emptying scans commonly used to evaluate patients with gastrointestinal complaints, according to research published in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine Technology.

The Academic Council is composed of faculty members of nuclear medicine departments, divisions, or sections in accredited medical schools, those in approved nuclear medicine residency programs, or in accredited technologist training programs. However, any individual interested in education is welcome to join. The Academic Council is dedicated to the scientific interchange of ideas among SNMMI members who have an interest in training and education of undergraduates and graduates in Nuclear Medicine (which includes general Nuclear Medicine, Cardiovascular Nuclear Medicine, PET/CT imaging and Molecular Imaging).The overall mission of the Academic Council is to: promote medical education, research and patient care related to Nuclear Medicine, provide to membership expertise in the training and education of undergraduates and graduates in Nuclear Medicine, including in mentoring and leadership, provide a forum for members for discussion of issues and problems of mutual interest and concern within the Nuclear Medicine community, as well as an informal exchange of ideas and programs, provide outreach to other professionals and organizations, nurture new membership into the society, serve as a resource to Young Professionals in career development, and serve as a resource to SNMMI leadership. Within the Council there is a subgroup of Program Directors/Associate Program Directors of Nuclear Medicine residency programs (the Nuclear Medicine Program Directors Association, NMPDA). The Academic Council is an advocate for Nuclear Medicine education and training to organized Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, as well as providing an avenue of communication for Program Directors and Coordinators to accrediting bodies, certification boards, other specialty societies, and government agencies.

The Therapy Center of Excellence is dedicated to all aspects of the development and utilization of Targeted Radioisotope Therapy (TRT) as an alternative to other treatments. The Therapy Center is creating a multi-disciplinary interest group to share ideas, develop education offerings and advance the utilization of radionuclide therapy.

Radiopharmaceutical Therapy Controls Symptoms and Reduces Medications in Insulinoma Patients

PRRT is effective for clinical control of symptomatic metastatic insulinomas, according to new research published in JNM. In the largest study to date of metastatic insulinoma patients treated with PRRT, more than 80 percent of patients had long-lasting symptom control, and nearly 60 percent were able to reduce the use of other drugs to treat the disease.
