SNMMI-TS Awards

ERF-SNMMI-TS Advanced Degree Award - $5,000

  • Serves to support a student who is pursuing an advanced degree program, (master's or PhD) to advance his/her career in nuclear medicine.
ERF-SNMMI-TS Annual Meeting Travel Awards (Tied to Annual Meeting Abstract Submission) - $1,000 each (# of awards vary)
  • Travel Awards support the attendance of certified nuclear medicine technologists, CNMT or RT(N) to the SNMMI Annual Meeting
  • Travel Awards are given to those whose abstracts have been accepted at the SNMMI Annual Meeting.
ERF-SNMMI-Technologist Student Annual Meeting Travel Awards (Tied to Annual Meeting Abstract Submission) - $1,000 each (# of awards vary)
  • Travel Awards support the attendance of nuclear medicine technology students in order to present molecular imaging abstracts at SNMMI Annual Meeting.
SNMMI-TS Career Advancement Grant - $500 each (13 awards)
  • This grant serves to support nuclear medicine technologists wishing to pursue additional educational opportunities in an effort to advance their professional career.  
  • Additional education opportunities include, but are not limited to; continuing education courses (live or online), ARRT certification exams (application fees), degree seeking education (associate, bachelors or masters) etc. 
  • This grant is funded by the American Registry for Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
ERF-SNMMI-TS Bachelors or Entry Level Masters Degree Completion Scholarship - $4,000
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Entry Level Master's Degree Completion Scholarship serves to support current nuclear medicine technologists
  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree or Entry-level Maser's degree completion program related to their nuclear medicine careers.
ERF-SNMMI-TS Graduate Program Grant - $20,000 (award year varies based on funds available)
  • In June 2013, the SNMMI-TS approved a new strategic plan. The plan includes a specific goal for “professional development” which focuses on advanced level education and career development. Through the implementation of this plan and the work of the Educators Committee, we are hopeful that several more advanced level programs will open around the country.
  • While these programs may not utilize the same curriculum as the NMAA, they will be at a Masters level and will provide additional advanced level educational opportunities to our members.
ERF-JNMT - $450 each (6 awards)
  • The JNMT best papers are selected by the JNMT Editor and JNMT associate editors.
Mickey Williams Technologist Minority Scholarship - $2,500 (2 awards)
  • These scholarships support minority pursuing a two- or four-year degree in nuclear medicine.
  • This scholarship honors the memory of Mickey Williams, a past SNMMI-TS president who immigrated to the United States from Jamaica.
  • Two winners will be selected; these awards are made possible by the Professional Development and Education Fund (PDEF).
Susan C. Weiss Clinical Advancement Scholarship (Awarded every even year) - $500
  • In honor of Susan C. Weiss, SNMMI-TS Past-President & former Executive Director of the Education and Research Foundation for SNMMI,
  • The SNMMI-TS Susan C. Weiss Clinical Advancement Scholarships serve to support certified nuclear medicine technologists (CNMTs) who are pursuing clinical advancement through didactic educational programs.
Paul Cole Student Technologist Scholarship - $1,000 each (10 awards)
  • This scholarship supports a student in training (or accepted) at an institution accredited through the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT)
PDEF Professional Development Scholarship - $5,000
  • This scholarship serves to support a student who is employed as a technologist and is actively pursuing an advanced degree (master's or PhD)  related to his/her nuclear medicine career.
ERF-SNMMI-TS Outstanding Technologist Education Award (Please email Nikki Wenzel-Lamb) - $750
  • The purpose of this award to is to recognize an SNMMI-TS member who has demonstrated outstanding service and dedication to the field of nuclear medicine technology. 
  • Eligible candidates include SNMMI-TS members in any area of the field of nuclear medicine technology who have exhibited commitment to advancing the field in their workplace and through their involvement with the Society.
  • Both clinical nuclear medicine technologists and educators are eligible and are encouraged to be nominated.
  • Nominees must be involved with the Society at the local, regional and/or national level and have at least five years of experience in nuclear medicine technology.

SNMMI Awards
Paul C. Aebersold Award - Non-monetary award
  • The SNMMI Committee on Awards selects an individual as the recipient of the Paul C. Aebersold Award for Outstanding Achievement in Basic Science applied to Nuclear Medicine or Molecular Imaging.
  • The Aebersold Award is named for Paul C. Aebersold, a pioneer in the biologic and medical application of radioactive materials and the first director of the Atomic Energy Commission's Division of Isotopes Development at Oak Ridge.
  • It was first awarded in 1973 and honors outstanding achievement in basic science applied to nuclear medicine or molecular imaging.
  • This prestigious plaque award is presented at the SNMMI Annual Meeting in June each year.
Alavi-Mandell Publication Awards (Tied to JNM Abstracts) - $120 (# of awards varies)
  • The award is given to individuals who were trainees/students at the time the work was carried out and made a major contribution to the completion of the project. 
  • The individual is the first author of the paper published in the JNM
ERF-SNMMI Annual Meeting Travel Awards (Tied to Annual Meeting Abstract Submission) - $1,000 (# of awards vary)
  • Travel Awards support the attendance of non-technologist students, postdoctoral or clinical trainees in order to present molecular imaging abstracts at the SNMMI Annual Meeting
Mitzi & William Blahd, MD, Pilot Research Grant - $25,000
  • The pilot research grant is designed to help a basic or clinical scientist in the early stages of their career conduct research that may lead to further funding.
  • This grant may be used for salary support of the principal investigator, as well as direct costs of supplies and equipment.
  • Support is not provided for salaries of other research personnel, or for indirect costs.

Bradley-Alavi Student Fellowship - $3,000 each (3 awards)

  • Bradley-Alavi Student Fellowships are designed to stimulate students’ interest in molecular imaging/nuclear medicine by supporting their full-time participation in clinical and basic research activities for three months (or less).

ERF-SNMMI CMIIT Lab Professional Recognition Award for Contributions to Molecular Imaging - $1,000

  • This award is designed to recognize innovative/novel and high-impact tools, techniques, and practices in molecular imaging developed by non-PhD laboratory professionals.
  • This award is distinct from the CMIIT Young Investigator Award (YIA) presented during the SNMMI annual meeting and is specifically created for non-PhD lab professionals.
  • Publication of the work is not a requirement and larger bodies of work may be better suited for submission for the YIA, especially if the emphasis is upon research results as opposed to the development of new tools and techniques.
  • Purpose: The Lab Professionals Contribution Award is presented annually. Its purpose is to promote the innovative efforts and exemplary accomplishments by individuals in the lab who may not have the opportunity to receive recognition in other arenas. Nominations should focus on achievements in innovation with emphasis on how the achievement has advanced an area of molecular imaging.

CSNMMI-SNMMI Chinese Physician Training Program - $9,000 each (2 awards)

  • The SNMMI with provide funding for two Chinese nuclear medicine physicians to reside for three months at a U.S. host institution to learn best practices, especially in the area of imaging equipment and nuclear medicine and foster professional networks with U.S. physicians and medical professionals.
Robert E. Henkin, MD, Government Relations Fellowship -$5,000
  • The Robert E. Henkin Fellowship is designed to provide young professionals in nuclear medicine and molecular imaging direct personal exposure to government relations activities of the SNMMI as well as the state and federal legislative and regulatory processes.
  • The Fellowship is designed to provide gifted and highly motivated young nuclear and molecular imaging professionals with first-hand experience in health policy development. For the purpose of this proposal, a young professional shall be defined as a resident or fellow (physician), a scientist or technologist who has completed their training within the last 10 years.
  • Professionals who have been in the field for longer than ten years are not eligible.

Hyman-Ghesani RAD-AID SNMMI Global Health Scholarship - $4,000

  • The SNMMI has entered into a collaboration agreement with RAD-AID, whose mission is to increase and improve radiology resources in the developing and impoverished countries of the world. Radiology is a part of nearly every segment of health care, including pediatrics, obstetrics, medicine and surgery, making the absence of radiology a critical piece of global health disparity.
  • This collaborative effort, led by Dr. Munir Ghesani will allow the SNMMI to provide two awards instead of one.
  • The name of the award has been changed to the “Hyman-Ghesani RAD-AID SNMMI Global Health Scholarship.”
  • The award recipients will participate in a 10-14 day international visit to the Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to share imaging protocols, best practices and radiation safety concepts in nuclearmedicine, attend multidisciplinary conferences with the clinical colleagues and show pertinent cases, and deliver presentations at the evening educational sessions/dinner events.

Masahiro Iio, MD, Award (Tied to Annual Meeting Abstract Submission for Japanese Citizens) - $750 each (2 awards)

  • The SNMMI Masahiro Iio, MD Award will offer two awards of $750 toward travel expenses to the 2017 SNMMI Annual Meeting to Japanese citizens.
  • This travel award will be given to the first authors of the top two abstracts from Japan.
ERF-JNM - $1,200 each (up to 6 awards)
  • The JNM best papers are selected by the JNM Editor and JNM associate editors. 
Loevinger Berman Award (Selected by the MIRD Committee) - $1,000
  • The award was established in 1999 by the Medical Internal Radiation Dose (MIRD) Committee in honor of Robert Loevinger and Mones Berman, who formulated the MIRD schema for internal dose calculations.
  • The award is given in recognition of excellence pertaining to the field of internal dosimetry as it relates to nuclear medicine through: research and/or development, significant publication contributions, or advancement of the understanding of internal dosimetry in relationship to risk and therapeutic efficacy.
Marc Tetalman, MD, Memorial Award (Awarded every even year) - $1,000
  • This biannual award honors the research accomplishments of a young investigator who is pursuing a career in nuclear medicine.
  • Dr. Tetalman was a highly respected and productive clinician, researcher, and member of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging before his tragic death as a young man.
ERF-SNMMI Molecular Imaging Research Grant for Junior Academic Faculty - $!05,000
  • The objection of this program is to support one junior faculty member in an academic/research setting, and to enable them to engage in Molecular Imaging research related to diagnostic or therapeutic applications.  
Michael J. Welch, RPSC Postdoctoral Travel Grant - $1,200
  • The purpose of the Michael J. Welch post-doctoral travel award is to recognize an outstanding abstract by a young investigator in the area of radiochemistry.
  • The award amount and whether it is given out will be contingent on receiving funding from the Michael J. Welch Foundation.
Michael J. Welch Award - $1,000
  • The Michael J. Welch, PhD Award is intended to honor individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of radiopharmaceutical sciences, has been involved in mentoring students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty, and community service to the field of radiopharmaceutical chemistry and molecular imaging.  
ERF-SNMMI Postdoctoral Molecular Imaging Research Scholar Program -  (Awarded every even year/subject to change) $65,000
  • The postdoctoral program will support a two-year research endeavor that promotes integration of molecular imaging into the career of the trainee.
ERF-SNMMI Pre-doctoral Molecular Imaging Research Scholar Program (Awarded every odd year/subject to change) $45,000
  • The predoctoral program supports a research scholar in an established molecular imaging lab that will apply molecular imaging approaches (including tool development) to investigate biological pathways in disease models.
  • The objective is to encourage the integration of imaging approaches in the research of molecular pathways of disease.
Saul Hertz, MD, Award (Nominations handled through Therapy Center of Excellence, contact mwalton@snmmi.org)
  • In honor of the professional achievements of Dr. Hertz, SNMMI established a new life-time achievement award to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to radionuclide therapy.

Ursula Mary Kocemba-Slosky, PhD, Professional Relations Fellowship - $5,000
  • The professional relations fellowship is designed to provide young professionals in nuclear medicine and molecular imaging direct, personal exposure to professional/public relations activities of the SNMMI as they relate to other medical societies and other professional organizations.
  • The fellowship is designed to provide a gifted and highly motivated young nuclear medicine or molecular imaging professional with first-hand experience in the professional intersociety relations process.
  • A young professional is defined as an MD, scientist or technologist who has completed at least 3 years, but no more than 10 years of post-training experience in the field.
  • Professionals who have been in the field longer than 10 years are not eligible.
Henry N. Wagner, Jr., MD, Image of the Year Award
  • The Henry N. Wagner, Jr., MD, Image of the Year Award celebrates the considerable contributions of Henry N. Wagner, Jr., MD to the fields of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging. 
  • This award recognizes outstanding science and identifies the top abstract images in one of the following categories: cardiology, general nuclear medicine, neuroscience, and oncology in conjunction with the SNMMI Highlights Symposium. 
  • This award is selected using Dr. Wagner’s long-standing criteria: is it true? Is it new? Is it well-designed? And is it meaningful?
Henry N. Wagner, Jr., MD, Best Paper Award
  • The Henry N. Wagner, Jr., MD, Best Paper Award celebrates the considerable contributions of Henry N. Wagner, Jr., MD to the fields of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging. 
  • This award recognizes outstanding science and identifies the top paper in one of the following categories: cardiology, general nuclear medicine, neuroscience, and oncology in conjunction with the SNMMI Highlights Symposium. 
  • This award is selected using Dr. Wagner’s long-standing criteria: is it true? Is it new? Is it well-designed? And is it meaningful?

SNMMI Wagner-Torizuka Fellowship - $24,000 over two years (3 Fellowships)

  • SNMMI Wagner-Torizuka Fellowship, sponsored by Nihon Medi-Physics Co., LTD, is a one or two-year fellowship in the United States and Canada for Japanese physicians in the early stages of their careers.
  • The purpose of the program is to provide experience and training in nuclear medicine/molecular imaging modalities in the areas of cardiology, neurology, and oncology.
  • The program is expected to advance Fellows' research and clinical expertise, as well as facilitate professional development, and to equip them to make significant contributions to the field of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging in Japan.
Arthur Weis Award in Radiation Dosimetry and Safety (Tied to Annual Meeting Abstract Submissions) - $500
  • This award celebrates the considerable contributions of Art Weis to the field of nuclear medicine. As founder and chief executive of Capintec, Inc., Art championed technological advances in the accurate assessment of administered activity and biological assays of radioactivity at a time when these considerations, of fundamental importance to our field, were not as refined as they are now. In addition, Art was very active within the SNMMI, serving as chair of a number of essential committees and receiving the SNMMI Presidential Distinguished Service Award in 2008.
  • The Art Weis Award recognizes outstanding original work in radiation safety and dosimetry, as Art considered these to be crucial to the advancement of nuclear medicine.
  • Abstracts submitted by physicians, scientists or technologists which advance these concepts are hereby solicited for consideration for this award.
YIA Young Investigator Award - award amount and number varies
  • Each year the SNMMI sponsors the Young Investigator Award symposium and competition in association with several SNMMI councils and Centers of Excellence for the best scientific abstracts in various specialties within the field of nuclear medicine.
  • All applicants must be medical students, residents, fellows or graduate students, or be within 5 years of completing a Ph.D. or certified nuclear medicine training program or other residency or fellowship training program to be eligible for consideration and there is no age limit.
