Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Community Gathers at SNMMI 2022 Annual Meeting

Reston, VA — The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) hosted more than 6,700 physicians, technologists, pharmacists, laboratory professionals, scientists and others at its 2022 Annual Meeting last week in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Nearly 4,000 individuals attended in-person, while approximately 2,800 took advantage of the meeting’s virtual platform.
“After more than two years apart, joining together in-person was a truly wonderful experience,” said Munir Ghesani, MD, FACNM, FACR, newly elected SNMMI president. “The meeting provides such a unique opportunity to hear first-hand about the latest advances of the field and to network with colleagues from around the world.
More than 130 continuing education and scientific sessions were offered at the meeting, covering the most recent research in the areas of cardiology, neurology, oncology, and others. The Annual Meeting poster hall included more than 800 posters, and the exhibit hall housed 450 exhibitors.
In addition to the election of Ghesani as SNMMI president, the 2022-23 leadership team was installed during the meeting. Helen Nadel, MD, FRCPC, was named as president-elect and Cathy Sue Cutler, PhD, FSNMMI, as vice president-elect. SNMMI Technologist Section officers for 2022-23 are Krystle W. Glasgow, MIS, CNMT, NMTCB(CT), NMAA, FSNMMI-TS, as president and Dmitry Beyder, CNMT, MPA, as president-elect.
SNMMI presented a number of major awards at the meeting. Simon R. Cherry, PhD, received the Benedict Cassen Prize for Research in Molecular Imaging and presented a lectureship titled “A Matter of Time.” Markus Schwaiger, MD, received Georg Charles de Hevesy Nuclear Pioneer Award, and Robert H. Mach, PhD, received the Paul C. Aebersold Award for Outstanding Achievement in Basic Nuclear Medicine Science. Andrei Iagaru, MD, FACNM, was named as the first recipient of the Sam Gambhir Trailblazer Award. Fifteen new Fellows were announced and recognized by SNMMI during the meeting. At the Henry N. Wagner, Jr., Highlights Symposium, the scientific highlights of the Annual Meeting were presented in the context of modern molecular medicine. The SNMMI Image of the Year—a detailed depiction of 68Ga-FAPI-46 PET signal after acute anterior myocardial infarction—was announced during the lecture; the image was created by Johanna Diekmann, MD, and colleagues for their abstract “Predicting Remodeling and Outcome from Molecular Imaging of Fibroblast Activation in Patients after Acute Myocardial Infarction.” The Abstract of the Year was awarded to Chandrasekhar S. Bal, MD, DNB, DSc (HC), FAMS, FNASc, FASc, and colleagues for their study “A Phase II clinical study on 225Ac-DOTATATE Therapy in Advanced Stage Gastroenteropancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor Patients.”
