Professional Advancement

The profession of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging has evolved over the past several years, and continues to evolve to include imaging and therapy beyond the sole use of radioactive materials. Fusion imaging, combining traditional nuclear medicine with other imaging technologies like CT and MRI and their related contrast agents, as well as new and exciting areas like fluorescence imaging are examples of this. ‘Molecular imaging and therapy’ is a phrase which has been developed in recognition of this expansion.  As such, the SNMMI-TS has embraced this evolution with a vision of being the recognized leader in this exciting and ever-growing arena.

Educational Programs

Over the years, multiple pathways have been developed to begin a career in imaging and specifically in nuclear medicine technology including:

  • Certificate programs (e.g. hospital-based programs for radiology, nuclear medicine and radiation therapy)
  • 2-year associate programs
  • 4-year baccalaureate programs
  • 5-year masters programs

More than 80 JRCNMT Accredited Nuclear Medicine Technology programs currently offer instruction and clinical internship.General prerequisites depend on the type of program offered, but typically include a background in science and mathematics and an interest in working with patients. To find a program by state, search here.

Certification

Upon successful completion of a nuclear medicine program, qualified technologists can be certified through examination by one of the national certifying agencies. Many employers and an increasing number of states now require certification or licensure.

There are several advanced degree programs and certifications available to the nuclear medicine technologist.
  • Nuclear Medicine Advanced Associate - The Nuclear Medicine Advanced Associate (NMAA) is a valuable part of the nuclear medicine team. With advanced training through a master’s level program and advanced certification through the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB), the NMAA will be able to fill the gap in the nuclear medicine department from pre-testing assessment through pre-dictation assessment, allowing the nuclear medicine physician or radiologist the freedom to commit to the final interpretation of the tests while maintaning the hands-on approach to patient care—without sacrificing quality. Learn more.
  • PET Certification Exam - The PET technologist is a medical imaging technologist who has a high level of knowledge in positron emission tomography and is dedicated to producing high quality, diagnostically accurate results in a manner that is safe and effective for the patient. In addition to meeting all the eligibility requirements for nuclear medicine, radiography or radiation therapy, and passing the respective certification exam, the PET technologist has additional clinical experience and knowledge specific to the use of instrumentation, radiopharmaceuticals and adjunct medications related to positron emission tomography. Learn more about the PET Exam. SNMMI offers a PET Online Review Workshop that is designed to help prepare technologists for the NMTCB's PET Exam. Following the NMTCB's content outline, the workshop offers a comprehensive review of both PET and PET/CT.
  • CT Certification Exam - Candidates pursuing certification in computed tomography (CT) must be registered with the ARRT in Radiography, Nuclear Medicine Technology (registration with NMTCB is also accepted), or Radiation Therapy. In addition, candidates must document completion of the CT Clinical Experience Requirements (effective 2008, effective 2011). NOTE: These requirements include clinical procedures including activating actual CT scans, known as “initiating the scan” or “making the exposure.” Candidates are responsible for ensuring state laws in their area allow them to complete this requirement. Contact a member of the Clinical Requirements Department at (651) 687-0048, ext. 8570, with any questions. Learn more.
  • NCT Certification Exam - The nuclear cardiology technologist is a nuclear medicine technologist who has a high level of knowledge in nuclear cardiology and is dedicated to producing high quality, diagnostically accurate results in a manner that is safe and effective for the patient. In addition to meeting all the eligibility requirements for an entry level nuclear medicine technologist and passing the certification exam, the nuclear cardiology technologist has additional clinical experience and knowledge specific to the use of instrumentation, radiopharmaceuticals and adjunct medications in the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease. Learn more about the NCT Exam. SNMMI offers a NCT Online Review Workshop that is designed to prepare technologists for the NMTCB's NCT Exam. The course reviews the NMTCB's nuclear cardiology examination content specifications.
