Governance Overview

The SNMMI is a volunteer, not-for-profit entity organized under section 501(c) 3 of the IRS code. It is incorporated in the state of Washington and maintains its headquarters, with a paid professional staff of 45, in Reston, Virginia. The Society governance structure, in common with most professional medical societies, includes a policy-making Board of Directors, a representative component - the House of Delegates, committees, and councils. In addition, two centers of excellence (CoE), the PET CoE and the Center for Molecular Imaging Innovation and Translation (CMIIT), offer members a chance to deepen their professional affiliations within SNMMI. Tthe Society has chartered fourteen chapters that are separately incorporated, stand-alone organizations, with professional affiliations.

The Board of Directors is the governing body of the Society. Click here to learn more about the Board of Directors.

SNMMI's Therapy Center of Excellence is an organizational component within the SNMMI dedicated to all aspects of the development and utilization of Targeted Radioisotope Therapy as an alternative to other treatments. Specifically, the new center will bring together a centralized group of all constituents within this area creating a multi-disciplinary interest group whereby industry, big pharma, physicians, scientists, government and regulatory agencies as well as other stakeholders can convene to share ideas, develop education offerings and advance the utilization of radionuclide therapy. Click here to learn more about the Therapy Center of Excellence.

SNMMI's PET Center of Excellence is an organizational component within the SNMMI that is dedicated to working in support of all aspects of the development and utilization of PET and PET/CT in the detection and management of disease. Click here to learn more about the PET Center of Excellence.

SNMMI's Center for Molecular Imaging Innovation and Translation (CMIIT) facilitates initiatives to bring molecular imaging discoveries from the lab to the patient and to advance "personalized" medicine. The primary focal areas of the CMIIT are educational programs, professional and intersociety networking, and serving as a resource for development and implementation of SNMMI policy in this specialized area. Click here to learn more about the CMIIT.

The Society also hosts a 12,000 person Technologist Section composed of professional nuclear medicine and molecular imaging technologists. The Technologist Section has a parallel governance structure to the Society's with its own budget, officers, executive board, national council, committees and programs. Officers and representatives of the Technologist Section serve on most Society committees, boards and other governance entities. Most SNMMI chapters also host parallel Technologist Section chapters or their equivalent. Click here to learn more about the SNMMI-TS.
