SNMMI joins NIH Funding Support Letter

March 17, 2023

SNMMI joins with more than 370 member organizations represented by the ADHOC Group for Medical Research urging lawmakers to invest in the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the newly established Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) program, as well as other agencies dedicated to advancing innovative treatments and therapies.

The President’s FY 2024 budget proposal was just released requesting a total of $51.1 billion for ARPA-H and $48.6 billion for NIH, a plus-up of $0.9 billion from 2023 funding levels. This budget request will now be considered by lawmakers in a series of budget hearings.

The ADHOC Group letter urges Congress to pass the appropriations bills expeditiously and specifically requests that lawmakers plus-up funding by $3.465 billion towards NIH, with a total investment of $50.924 billion in the FY 2024 budget. This recommendation is based on data provided by leading researchers and experts, including the Science and Technology Action Committee’s estimate that the U.S. would need to double research and development investments in order to remain competitive in STEM programs globally.
