CMS announces 2023 MEDCAC meeting

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will hold a public meeting with the Medicare Evidence Development and Coverage Advisory Committee (MEDCAC) on February 13-14, 2023 at 10:00am-3:00pm EST.
Cathy S. Cutler, PhD will present on behalf of SNMMI. Dr. Cutler is the Director of the Medical Isotope Research and Production Program at Brookhaven National Laboratory and serves as the Vice President-Elect at SNMMI.
The basis of the discussion will be the final AHRQ report and current criteria used to assess coverage with evidence development (CED) when examining whether clinical studies qualify for Medicare coverage. The MEDCAC will then make recommendations to CMS based on the information gathered from participants on the call.
Notably, the current CED criteria has not been evaluated in eight years; however, there have been numerous advances in technology and treatments. The goal of the meeting is to ensure study methodologies are reflective of those changes, representative of the diversity of populations receiving Medicare benefits, and incorporating real world evidence when assessing whether a treatment is reasonable and necessary.
