The ‘Mars Shot for Nuclear Medicine, Molecular Imaging, and Molecularly Targeted Radiopharmaceutical Therapy’ is a forward-looking glimpse into the future of nuclear medicine. The manuscript—published in The Journal of Nuclear Medicine (JNM)—outlines visionary but achievable goals for the many facets of nuclear medicine. The paper was written by a multidisciplinary group of scientists and physicians from the research and discovery domain of the SNMMI’s Value Initiative.

The goal of the SNMMI Mars Shot Research Fund is to support innovative, transformative, nuclear medicine imaging and radiopharmaceutical therapy research. Today, we can prolong the lives of patients with cancer with RPTs. Tomorrow, we may be able to cure cancer in many patients with cutting edge use of imaging and RPT tools.

2024 Mars Shot Grants

The deadline has been extended for two of the $100,000 SNMMI Mars Shot grants for 2024: diagnostic pathways in prostate cancer, and community-based theranostics..

The grant portal for these applications will now close on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.

Overview & Panel Discussion

The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) has announced the creation of the Mars Shot Fund, an initiative to raise $100 million to help pay for research into nuclear medicine, molecular imaging, and therapy. The campaign kicked off with an informative session at the SNMMI 2022 Annual Meeting in Vancouver with Dr. Richard Wahl.

SNMMI Mars Shot/ Lobular Breast Cancer Alliance

Marina Sharifi MD, PhD was selected as the recipient of the joint SNMMI/LBCA Invasive Lobular Carcinoma Imagining Research Fellowship. Dr. Sharifi was awarded $100,000 for her proposal, "Integrating minimally invasive biomarkers of estrogen signaling to detect endocrine therapy resistance in metastatic invasive lobular cancer."

Making the Case for Nuclear Medicine

By using drugs that emit small amounts of traceable radiation— radiopharmaceuticals, or tracers—nuclear medicine now has the capability to image every major organ system in order to diagnose and manage the treatment of cancer, heart disease, and disorders of the brain, gastrointestinal tract, lung, bone, kidney, thyroid, and more.
