SNMMI Supports ARPA-H Act

SNMMI signed on as a supporting organization to the Advanced Research Project Agency Health (ARPA-H) Act (H.R. 5585). The Society also offered to be a resource as the bill's sponsor continues to refine the legislative text. The bill was introduced by Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-CA) in October 2021 and would create ARPA-H as a separate office within HHS (reporting to the secretary of health) as well as authorizing $3 billion in new funding.
Rep. Eshoo's support for the effort will be crucial to advancing any legislation in this Congress. Recently, she joined forces with Reps. Diana DeGette (D-CO) and Fred Upton (R-MI) to advance two critical health care bills, CURES 2.0 (H.R. 6000) and her bill (H.R. 5585). Once approved, the measures would not only create ARPA-H to find new cures and treatments for some of the world’s most difficult diseases but would also provide the new agency the framework it needs to be successful.
“ARPA-H and Cures 2.0 are complementary and the chair will seek to move them together so that we can advance the legislation, not only through the full committee, but through the full House of Representatives,” said Eshoo, who serves as chairwoman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health. As the latest continuing resolution for government funding expires March 11, 2022, we hope Congress can come to agreement on CY 2022 levels, leading to possible further action on these two important pieces of legislation.
