On September 25-26, SNMMI’s Outreach Domain supported the Central Chapter in an initiative to share the value of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging with prostate cancer patients as well as with urologists and oncologists.
Central Chapter Outreach Champion Chad Wright, MD, organized the effort, bringing in Bital Savir-Baruch, MD, from Loyola University. Dr. Savir-Baruch offered two presentations at Ohio State University—first at a prostate cancer support group’s evening meeting and then at a urologist/oncologist morning grand rounds. Her travel was supported through the SNMMI Value Initiative.
According to Drs. Wright and Savir-Baruch, the event was a success, with about 28 patients and caregivers in attendance at the support group meeting and about 45 medical professionals in attendance at the grand rounds. Feedback from both groups was extremely positive, and several patients expressed interest in becoming involved in SNMMI’s patient advocacy and education efforts.
Patrick DiMeo, RN, facilitator of the support group, said the event filled a real need among the patient community. “Recently there has been a growing interest on this topic of PSMA PET imaging and the new PSMA theranostics for treating patients with metastatic prostate cancer,” he said. “Everyone was delighted to learn more about both from Dr. Savir-Baruch.”
SNMMI’s Outreach Domain encourages all chapters to consider initiatives such as these. Technical and financial support is available. Please contact Outreach Director Linda Budzinski at email@example.com for more information and to discuss potential projects.
