On Thursday April 25th, distinguished SNMMI member Giuseppe Esposito, MD, alongside staff from SNMMI, and MITA hosted congressional staffers at Georgetown Hospital in Washington, DC. Congressional staff from a variety of offices made the trip to Georgetown to learn about the value of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging. During the visit, attendees took part in a comprehensive presentation on the value of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging. Following the presentation, Dr. Esposito lead a tour of the nuclear medicine facilities at the hospital, which included a demonstration of a nuclear medicine scan. Attendees of the tour were able to view the outcome of a scan, which provides real time information for both the patient and physician to observe how the body is functioning. Being able to examine how the body is functioning, sometimes even before symptoms occur, allows physicians to most effectively diagnose patients and provide a specialized treatment plan.
After the tour concluded, SNMMI staff discussed some of the patient access issues and challenges with reimbursement of high-valued diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals in the Medicare hospital outpatient setting. Tours such as this one are great opportunities to voice concerns for the field, educate policymakers, and show the value of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging. If you would like to host a tour of your facility, please contact Dalton Clark, SNMMI Associate Manager, Government Affairs, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
