Session on Training for Nuclear Medicine Physicians to be Offered at SNMMI Annual Meeting

May 22, 2018

The training path for nuclear medicine physicians is an important and ongoing topic of discussion for the field, especially as the field continues to grow in new and exciting directions. How can the field encourage appropriate use of nuclear medicine while maintaining high-quality clinical practice? How should changing approaches to healthcare impact training pathways? What are international standards for nuclear medicine training? How should the field proceed in order to ensure the best possible care for patients? And how should we grow future leaders who can lead research and discovery and make transformative changes in our field?

To advance this discussion, Satoshi Minoshima, MD, and Richard L. Wahl, MD, FACNM, have developed a continuing education session for the 2018 SNMMI Annual Meeting in Philadelphia (June 23-26) that will

  • explain the need for future nuclear medicine and molecular imaging training;
  • discuss future strategies for training; and
  • describe current and ongoing efforts, both national and international.

Presentations in this session include:

  • Richard L. Wahl, MD, FACNM – Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging and Training: Envisioning the Future
  • M. Elizabeth Oates, MD – Integrating General Imaging Training
  • Don Yoo, MD – Training Nuclear Medicine Physicians for Value-Driven Practice
  • Andrew M. Scott, MD, FRACP, FAANMS – Nuclear Medicine Training: Creating an International Standard
  • George M. Segall, MD, FACNM, FSNMMI – Innovation in Training and Board Certification

The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion. The group is planning to summarize the session and discussion in a white paper. Looking forward to seeing all of you in the session!

The session, titled CE13: Training Future Nuclear Medicine Physicians – Strategy, will be held Saturday, June 23, from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m. in Room 204B. It will also be available through the Virtual Meeting.
