Webinar: Oncologic PET Coding & Reimbursement, Where Are We Today?
Presented by: Barry A. Siegel, MD and Denise A. Merlino, CNMT, CPC, MBA
Date: September 23, 2014
Time: 2:00 – 3:00pm EDT
On June 11, 2013 the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the Final “Decision Memo for Positron Emission Tomography (FDG) for Solid Tumors (CAG-00181R4)” that ended the requirements for coverage with evidence development (CED) for FDG PET for oncologic indications contained in section 220.6.17 of the Medicare National Coverage Determinations (NCD) Manual. This decision removed the requirement for prospective data collection by the National Oncologic PET Registry (NOPR) for those cancers or cancer types that had been covered under CED. CMS also determined that three (3) FDG PET scans would be covered when used to guide subsequent management of anti-tumor treatment strategy after completion of initial anticancer therapy. Coverage of any additional FDG PET scans beyond three (3) used to guide subsequent management of anti-tumor treatment strategy after completion of initial anti-tumor therapy will be determined by local Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs).
This Webinar will focus on new billing guidelines as well as medical necessity requirements including Change Request (CR) 8739, which clarifies the billing and coding for an initial treatment strategy (–PI modifier) FDG PET scan and three (3) subsequent treatment strategy (–PS modifier) FDG PET scans without the –KX modifier, as well as, the fourth FDG PET scan and beyond for subsequent treatment strategy for the same cancer diagnosis that will always require the –KX modifier.
