Therapy Center of Excellence

The Therapy Center of Excellence is dedicated to all aspects of the development and utilization of Targeted Radioisotope Therapy (TRT) as an alternative to other treatments. The Therapy Center is creating a multi-disciplinary interest group to share ideas, develop education offerings and advance the utilization of radionuclide therapy.

Mission

The Therapy Center of Excellence is an organizational component within the SNMMI dedicated to all aspects of the development and utilization of Targeted Radioisotope Therapy as an alternative to other treatments. Specifically, the new center will bring together a centralized group of all constituents within this area creating a multi-disciplinary interest group whereby industry, big pharma, physicians, scientists, government and regulatory agencies as well as other stakeholders can convene to share ideas, develop education offerings and advance the utilization of radionuclide therapy.

The Therapy Center of Excellence:

(a)  Provides a forum for members with similar interests

(b)  Provides expertise in TRT

(c)  Fosters research and education in TRT

(d)  Provides outreach to other professionals and organizations

(e)  Nurtures new membership in SNMMI

Overview of Proposed Center of Excellence Activities

Hossein Jadvar, MD, PhD, MPH, MBA, FACNM, FSNMMI

I am delighted that I have an opportunity to lead the SNMMI TCOE for the next 2 years along with a capable and knowledgeable Center’s board of directors.  I thank all those who retired this year from their positions within the Center including my predecessor, Dr. Neeta Pandit-Taskar, who contributed much to our Center’s multi-faceted activities over the past 2 years, and also would like to welcome those who have either joined newly or rejoined in a different position within the Center.  We are privileged to have Dr. Thomas Hope (UCSF) as the Vice-President and Dr. Carlos Uribe (British Columbia Cancer Research) as the new Secretary-Treasurer.  I also take this opportunity to welcome our new intern, Dr. Ashwin Parihar (Washington University) who will be mentored by Dr. Patrick Colletti (USC) and congratulate Dr. Amir Iravani (University of Washington, Seattle), board member, who received the highest prized inaugural SNMMI Mars Shot funding for his research proposal entitled “Phase II trial of biomarker modulated PSMA theranostics”.

We are in unprecedented times with rapid growth of and scientific advancements in theranostics and radiopharmaceutical therapy.  There is much to be excited about with an optimistic view of the near and the far future.  However, there are many challenges ahead too that needs to be tackled with.  These include, but are not limited to, adequate education, supply issues (both physicians and radiopharmaceuticals), potential turf scuffles, and need for generation of high-quality evidence in supporting radiopharmaceutical therapy as a legitimate therapeutic option that improves patient outcome, “adding time to life and life to time”.  We, in the Therapy Center of Excellence, are fortunate to have been trusted to help with supporting and contributing in multiple ways to the field of theranostics and radiopharmaceutical therapy.  I call on the Center’s board members to contribute to our goals despite their busy lives and ask the SNMMI members to join our team with their Center membership so that we can all work together toward our overarching objective of serving our patients.  We also welcome international partnerships in this arena and will reach out to strengthen our collaborations.
