BRAIN Initiative at NIH

March 28, 2014
Description:

In a pivot from earlier planning, the much-publicized BRAIN Initiative at NIH will now include a significant amount of funding for advanced imaging projects. This is a big victory for the imaging community, including many who wrote to NIH in support of increased imaging within the major new initiative. Now, we must ensure a robust response! DEADLINE extended to March 28!

Event Details:

In a pivot from earlier planning, the much-publicized BRAIN Initiative at NIH will now include a significant amount of funding for advanced imaging projects.  This is a big victory for the imaging community, including many who wrote to NIH in support of increased imaging within the major new initiative.

Now, we must ensure a robust response!  DEADLINE has been extended to March 28!  Please forward!

The Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) (RFA-MH-14-217) describes the goals for this new program:

  • $4m total funding (10% of the total NIH BRAIN funding pool)
  • the FOA will fund 9-10 awards up to $300k/year in direct costs
  • the grants will be PLANNING grants, intended to afford innovative teams of imaging researchers, societies, industry partners, and others the time and resources to prepare a truly transformative R01, P01, etc. by the end of the 3-year grant period
  • applications must propose to develop new techniques with capabilities far beyond the most current imaging techniques.  Incremental approaches will not be accepted.
  • awards will support collaborative meetings; early data gathering; prototype modeling; proof of concept; etc
  • awards are meant to encourage highly innovative teams, such as those that include radiologists, physicists, chemists, computational scientists, neuroscientists, industry partners, etc.

This program represents a unique type of award in one of NIH's most visible programs.  Advocates should be applauded for working to inform NIH about the potential for imaging in the BRAIN Initiative!  It clearly made an impact!

Now we must ensure that imaging scientists are truly seen as innovative leaders in the field.  An underwhelming response would be devastating for future funding opportunities radiology research within the 10-year BRAIN Initiative.

Please forward this email and details to your society members, department faculty and others that may be interested.
