Cardiac Sarcoidosis

Sarcoidosis is an autoimmune disease that affects the lungs, eyes and virtually any other organ of the body. Chronic and inflammatory, the disease causes clumps of cells similar to scar tissue to grow. In cardiac sarcoidosis, the clumps of cells grow in the heart muscle and interfere with heart function.

How does molecular imaging help people with cardiac sarcoidosis?

PET imaging with the radiotracer FDG is able to detect the chronic inflammation associated with the early stages of cardiac sarcoidosis, offering a distinct advantage over MR imaging that identifies late-stage scarring as a result of the condition.
